There’s an interesting reason behind that. In the 50s and 60s, people used to call in homesick after thanksgiving, which usually is on the fourth Thursday of November. This allowed people to have an extended vacation over the weekend.

But what happened was due to sale, and free time on hand for people lots of people started flocking into these stores to get stuff at discounted rates. So much so that people ended up fighting with each other. Hence the name Black Friday came across.
